Doing Good=Feeling Good

Service has been one thing that I have always loved and have appreciated so much more through the past few years. No matter what’s going on in your life, doing service for someone will always leave you feeling happier than before. I’ve also learned that service is a great way to distract yourself from your own struggles you’re going through. And I’ve been on the receiving end of it and I’ve been very appreciative of it. The wonderful thing about service is there’s not any set rules. Any time given or act done is appreciated. This week I had a wonderful opportunity to do just that.

I had the privilege of going to Feed My Starving Children for the first time and had a wonderful time there. Feed My Starving Children, “is a Christian non-profit organization that coordinates the packaging and distribution of food to people in developing nations. Founded in 1987, it has reached out to more than 70 countries.” So, our job is to help with the packaging process. Once you get there you put on your hairnet and then are told what the different jobs are. They also tell you where the food you are going to package goes to. The day I as there we were packaging food that will be sent to the Philippines! There’s the warehouse crew, labeling station, and then the packaging crew. Basically, the warehouse crew is there to help supply the packaging crew with what they need, and the labeling station is pretty self-explanatory. The nice thing is you can choose what job to do. If you need to sit down then you can choose the labeling station for example. I went with the packaging crew, and the day I was there we were packaging a mixture of rice, soy, vitamins, and vegetables. I was in charge of weighing the bags of the mixture to make sure they weigh the appropriate amount. If there’s too little or too much I take some of the rice from the top out, or put more in. (Each time you sign up to help out, you’ll be there for 2 hours.)

Not only is it fun to know you’re helping someone but during the process you get to enjoy the fun atmosphere. There’s music always playing and you have the opportunity to chat with new friends you make, or the friends you came with. You don’t even have time to think about anything you’re going through, you’re just so focused on the task you are given, with the goal in mind of helping children. After the end of the 2 hours when you’re finished helping clean up, they count the total boxes we filled and let us know how many children we will feed. I can’t remember the exact number of boxes our big group filled, but I know we fed over 120 children for a year! This experience just added to how amazing doing service can be! We were able to help those children and it only took 2 hours out of our day. But like I said earlier, any amount of service is appreciated, no matter how big or small. I challenge you guys to try to do one act of service next week. It can be anything you guys want to do!  Thank you so much for reading this and if you’d like to reach me, you can find me at IgettoandIam@gmail.com or @igettoandiam on Instagram.
